Working at height
Access technique is a method where descent or ascent on ropes is done. You then physically hang on the ropes and do the work. This discipline requires extensive training and rescue is part of the concept. The training is divided into levels. Each level has training that builds on the previous level. All access technique teams have an operational leader called a safety leader. This person is responsible for ensuring that all jobs are carefully risk assessed and carried out safely.
Fall protection is not an access method, but rather a way to secure oneself in areas where there is a risk of falling. You do not hang from the equipment as in Access Technique, but you use a harness connected to a line that is anchored to the structure so that falls are prevented or caught.
These disciplines require good and correct training. But it can be difficult to know who can offer training of satisfactory quality. Therefore, a certification scheme has been established where an independent party (Soft Certification) reviews the training offer. This is a voluntary scheme that several people use. You do not want to do this quality assurance yourself.
